ABS Kids Champions Innovation: New Vanderbilt Driving Program Supports Autistic Individuals in Tennessee
At ABS Kids, we are committed to ensuring that individuals on the autism spectrum receive the best care, education, and opportunities for growth. As part of our mission to advocate for the autistic community and support innovative programs that improve their quality of life, we’re thrilled to highlight Vanderbilt’s groundbreaking new driving program, recently featured on NewsChannel 5 Tennessee.
For many individuals with autism, the process of learning to drive can be overwhelming. Challenges with sensory processing, decision-making, and motor coordination can create barriers to gaining independence on the road. Recognizing these hurdles, Vanderbilt University Medical Center has launched a first-of-its-kind driving simulation program to help autistic individuals practice their driving skills in a safe, controlled environment—without being on the road.
Using cutting-edge simulation technology, this program offers a unique, hands-on experience that mimics real-world driving scenarios. It allows learners to develop confidence, enhance their decision-making skills, and work through sensory sensitivities—all crucial steps toward achieving independence.
At ABS Kids, we know that families with autistic children are constantly seeking ways to prepare for life beyond therapy.
While our core focus is on providing science-backed ABA therapy to support development, we also believe in promoting resources that empower autistic individuals to reach their fullest potential—including the ability to drive.
This program aligns with our key values of advocacy, innovation, and expertise:
- Access to life skills – Just as we work to improve access to ABA therapy, we support programs that help autistic individuals gain essential life skills, like driving.
- We Work in Wow – Our Wow moments come from seeing the children and families we support achieve milestones—big or small. Learning to drive is a huge step toward independence, and we celebrate that progress!
- Expertise and innovation in care – Just like Vanderbilt’s initiative, ABS Kids believes in using innovative methods to support autistic individuals in ways that work for their unique needs.
Programs like this are vital in breaking down barriers and ensuring that autistic individuals have the same opportunities for independence and success as their neurotypical peers. Whether through access to ABA therapy, specialized learning programs, or community advocacy, ABS Kids is proud to be a part of a movement that champions inclusivity and empowerment.
